“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
Regardless of what you find beautiful, the cornerstone of any reef tank design is coral propagation. Throughout my years of diving into the intricacies of saltwater reef tanks, the biggest issue experienced by aquarists happens to be the most important: propagation systems.

As a lifelong aquarist, Yuliya has an endless curiosity about our underwater universe. After graduating with a bachelor’s in Environmental Engineering, she transformed her passion into a successful career. While working at the Institute of Environmental Protection in Moscow, her passion for saltwater and reef aquariums only increased. Moving to the United States in 2013, Yuliya embarked on another impactful journey by sharing her unprecedented experience for all aquarium hobbyists ... Read More.
Recently, I spoke with a novice hobbyist just starting her journey into this underwater universe. As soon as I mentioned propagation, her eyes widened and she instantly deflated. Asking why she suddenly appeared deflated, she responded, “I just don’t think I have enough time to learn all of this.”
Are you like my newfound friend? Do you desire to capture the beauty of coral reefs, but feel it’s too complex for a novice? As I told her, don’t worry. In saltwater reef tanks, there’s two paths you can choose. Sure, you can establish a complicated coral propagation system or a frag tank in a few simple steps, but there’s an easier choice: frag racks.
Why do you need a frag rack?
Essentially, frag racks offer the base on which coral frags are placed to grow. Small holes are drilled into the frag racks, which then support the newly transplanted coral on a frag plug. In terms of reef aquascaping, frag racks let you position corals exactly how you want. However, not all frag racks suppliers are the same.
If you’ve ever spent time researching, or using, frag racks, then you understand how these essential reef building blocks aren’t always the most attractive. My first introduction to Reef Rax was out of desperation. After scouring the market searching for a frag rack that didn’t look like a cheap live rock knockoff, I was practically giddy when I laid my eyes on their beautiful frag rack collections.
Regardless of your tank aesthetics, Reef Rax offers an assortment of frag rack shapes, sizes and colors. While Reef Rax offers a host of sizes, I was looking for a smaller frag rack capable of filling in a specific section of my tank. With excitement, I ordered the black Nano Shelf frag rack, and eagerly awaited what I hoped to be the solution I’ve been searching for.
Thankfully, my wait wasn’t long due to their fast shipping. Like a kid on Christmas morning, I ripped open the packaging and laid my eyes on what’s become the best frag rack I’ve come across.
Seamless Design and Superior Functionality - Nano Shelf Frag Rack.
Instead of boring you with details easily found elsewhere, let’s dive right into the performance and function of the Nano Shelf. At first glance, this compact frag rack is impressive. Measuring 6.5 inches long and 3 1/8 inches deep, the beautiful texture and natural feel is unlike any other frag rack in my tank.
Because of its position on the overflow, I chose the black color design, but it’s available in five color options: white, black, purple, red and grey. BulkReefSupply have only the most popular colors in stock, purple and grey, so if you want a larger colors and shapes selection go directly to ReefRax website. Like most other nano frag racks, the Nano Shelf can be positioned along the tank walls via magnets.
Isolated in plastic, the magnets offer a firm grip. This is essential as you don’t want your coral to fall due to a weak magnet. After installing, I was beyond impressed with its appearance. The only problem is I wish I knew about ReefRax sooner.
Stability, Performance and Attractiveness - Reef Rax Nano Shelf Final Thoughts.
Ultimately, the Reef Rax Nano Shelf is among the best magnetic frag rack on the market. Its 100% safe resin material won’t compromise the health of your reef tank and it’s incredibly easy to use. There’s no need to cure it and it won’t leech harmful compounds into your tank.
If you’re searching for a capable, beautiful and affordable frag rack, give Reef Rax a chance. If your experience is like mine, you’ll wonder why more aquarists aren’t shouting its name from the rooftops.
